ABOUT BLABY & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB. Blaby & District Lions Club was formed in 1987 and chartered in June 1988. Its Mother club was Oadby & Wigston Lions Club. They advertised in the local paper for people interested in forming a Lions Club in the Blaby area. Initially Dennis Brooks, Ray Franklin and Jonathon Green met with two members of Oadby & Wigston Lions Club who guided them through the process of forming a Lions Club. Eventually the necessary 20 prospective members were found and the Club was formally chartered in June 1988. Initially the membership totalled 22 with two members transferring from other Clubs to join Blaby & District Lions Club. Our first or Charter President was Dennis Brooks who is still a member of the Club. Other officers that first year included Jonathon Green as secretary and Ray Franklin as treasurer. The current membership of the Club is 17 members all of whom are actively involved with fund raising and service activities. This figure includes 7 of the original members. Each year the Club attends all of the local fetes with various amusement and game stalls raising funds for our charity account. We also support the BBC Children in Need Appeal by collecting outside all of the local shopping centres and visiting all the pubs in our area. In recent years we have collected over £5000 each year and since the Club was formed we have raised £92000 for the appeal. Other events that we have organised for fund raising purposes include Millionaires Nights, Race Nights, Themed Evenings, Auctions, Sponsored Walks, Quiz Nights etc. each Christmas we collect tins of food outside the local supermarkets and make them up into food parcels which we then deliver to local people in need. We enjoy an active social calendar meeting monthly for games nights, indoor bowling, brewery visits, factory and manufacturing plant visits, ghost walks, theatre trips both locally and further a field, meals etc. Each year we have a Formal Dinner Dance to
celebrate our Charter. This is a time to get together with visiting Lions
from other Clubs to celebrate the chartering of our Club. The evening
is usually attended by the District Governor and civic dignatories |
