Blaby Lions celebrate their 19th charter dinner in style

Every year every Lion club around the world celebrates its charter. Its charter is received when the club is first formed.
For the Blaby Lions this was in 1988 so this year was their 19th anniversary celebration.

This year was special as they had two famous guests from BBC radio Leicester Dave Andrews and Monica Winfield. They kept the crowds entertained with amazing and funny events from their many years in radio.

The main reason for their attendance was to thank blaby Lions for all their help in the Ruby Rainbow appeal this year.

Blaby & District Lions Club continue to support the Radio Leicester Ruby Rainbow Appeal in organising collections at various events that they have held over the county in their quest to raise £400,000. This will go towards a new building at the Rainbows Hospice for teenagers and early twenties. The club has been instrumental in getting other Lions Clubs in Leicestershire to provide volunteers at some events and encouraged them to have money raising events for the same cause. Before the end of the year we will be holding a charity auction of memorabilia donated by famous people and full details will be advertised later.

The event was held at Cosby Golf club with over 80 people attending eating, drinking and dancing the night away to the Mike Grahame Duo Sound.

"It is rare these days to see such well organised and well run evenings with everybody smartly dressed, men in black tie and ladies in their best evening dresses" said Sally Bailey, an invited guest.

Children in Need – Blaby Lions excel raising over £4300

Blaby and District Lions Club on the 18th November raised over £4300 for the BBC Children in Need appeal.

The entire club was out in force on a cold Friday standing outside the Coop at Whetstone, around various locations in the main Fosse Park shopping area and Blaby precinct.

They started at 9am and finished collecting at 6pm, running a rota system so that members could go home for lunch or back to work.

Pudsey Bear was the main attraction on the day with some children crying with fear when they saw the bear and some children refusing to go home without him accompanying them in the car.

This is the 19th year that the Lions have helped raise money for Children in Need. Coordinator of manpower activities on the day Lion Joe Roper said ‘since starting in 1987 we have raised a total of over £92,000 which is an amazing achievement for such a small club.

Club secretary Lion Peter Lawrence said ‘we cannot thank enough The Coop, Whetstone, Sainsbury’s petrol station and Blaby precinct for letting us stand outside or in their premises and collect this amazing amount of money. Also a special thank you to the pubs in blaby, whetstone, Cosby, Littlethorpe, Countesthorpe and Enderby who between them raised over £1300.

When everybody had finished at 6pm outside the shops the other half of the day started with going around all the pubs and clubs in the Blaby District with Pudsey and collecting the collection tins which had been put out one week prior. Once this was done, the final part of the day began, the counting up of the money. This usually takes till just past midnight in a local pub back room with a most of the Lion members wives helping to count the money.

A long hard day but a great sense of achievement for all.

LIONS GET CHRISTMAS CANNED

Every year the Blaby and District Lions club brave the elements outside the Coop at Whetstone and Blaby precinct and collect tins for the needy.

For more years than l care to remember the Lions have collected an assortment tins from shoppers. The tins amounted to over1500 in number. They are separated into piles of different types and then put into food hampers and were distributed to over 140 elderly single people and 16 families received family hampers in and around Blaby District who are in need of a bit of extra cheer at Christmas.

‘The appeal is a major sorting exercise as we start with two rooms of my house full with mixed tins and when we finish we have over 150 nice neat parcels’ said project manager Lion Mike Predeaux.

‘It never ceases to amaze me how generous people are at Christmas, we have had shoppers giving us up to 20 tins for our appeal’ said Lion Alan Bailey current president.

‘We cannot thank enough the people of Whetstone and Blaby who generously gave us the tins over the two weekends’ said Lion secretary Peter Lawrence.
